Hurricane Island Tour: History, Sustainability, Education, & Research
Tuesday July 29th: Departing North Haven at 9:30 am / Returning to North Haven at 1:30 pm
Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership, the North Haven Historical Society, and the North Haven Conservation Partners are collaborating to offer this unique opportunity to learn about Hurricane Island, past and present. This tour of Hurricane Island will include a history walk, an overview of current educational programs and marine research initiatives, and a visit to the new, sustainably-built Field Research Station. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited, thank you for registering in advance.

This summer marks a special milestone for the North Haven Historical Society--our 50th Anniversary—and we’re celebrating in a big way! Join us at the museum for an evening full of community, history, and fun. The celebration will feature live music, a tintype photo booth, free BBQ prepared by the North Haven Lions Club, and old-fashioned lawn games for all ages. We’ll also offer museum tours and a few brief speeches reflecting on the past fifty years of preserving and sharing island history. This event is free and open to all, and we hope to see folks of every generation there. Whether you’re a longtime resident or just passing through, come celebrate this special moment with us—we can’t wait to see you at the museum!

BURNT ISLAND WALKING TOUR: HISTORY AND CONSERVATION

UNCOVERING THE ROYAL TAR: A MARITIME MYSTERY REOPENED

Join maritime investigator, veteran law enforcement officer, and master technical diver Dennis Dorsey for a fascinating look into the disaster of the Royal Tar, the British paddlewheel steamer that burned and sank off the Maine coast in 1836. This will be our second tour of Seaview, offering another chance to hear captivating stories about the lives of islanders laid to rest there. As we walk among the stones, we’ll share the histories, legacies, and memories of some of North Haven’s past residents—people who helped shape the island community we know today. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided, and as always, everyone is welcome. Come for the stories, stay for the conversation, and help us honor the rich lives that live on in memory.
