FISHING, BOATBUILDING, & DEEPWATER MARINERS OF NORTH HAVEN
The museum's boatshed is home to a collection of island boats and an exhibit describing the origins of each boat as well as maritime traditions of North Haven.
For island residents, boats have often been a part of everyday life, used for fishing and also as a way to transport goods and people to and from the island. Island boatbuilders made boats of all sizes for locals and residents along the Maine coast.
When North Haven became a summer vacation destination in the late 19th century, sailing and sailboat racing proved a popular activity and soon, island boatbuilders began making racing boats for the summer residents. One well known and popular small sailboat known as the North Haven Dinghy was designed by an early summer resident, Charles Weld and more than 100 dinghies were built at island boatyards.
