NORTH DISTRICT SCHOOL, NORTH HAVEN
Also known as the Pulpit Harbor School
An 1809 record of island roads referenced a schoolhouse in the North District located near a large white rock on Melatiah Luce’s land. It remains undetermined how long classes were held at that site or what happened to the North District school building.
By 1846, a land deed noted a new location for the North District schoolhouse on Nathaniel Ames’ land. Only a few years later, in 1852, a building was removed from that site and islanders approved $80.93 for the North District to purchase, remove, locate, and repair a schoolhouse. The new location was presumably near Pulpit Harbor, where on the 1859 map of Waldo County, the letters “SH” marked the location of a schoolhouse along an old road near Pulpit Harbor.
In this location, the school became known as the Pulpit Harbor School. On two occasions, islanders discussed moving the school yet again. An 1898 town meeting article sought approval to relocate the school to near Fuller Cemetery, as recommended by the school committee. No action was taken and again in 1899 the school committee recommended “removal of the schoolhouse in District No. 6 about 6 rods to the north, to get it away from the Town Road and out of the mud.”
School was held at the Pulpit Harbor schoolhouse until 1904 when it closed as the population of the area declined. In 1918 the building was dismantled and repurposed into other island buildings.
