WEST DISTRICT SCHOOL, NORTH HAVEN
I went to school at Bartlett’s Harbor. I had to walk from Grammy Thayer’s way over there…to school. It’s right where Harvey Demmons lives: that’s where the school house was.
Nora Davis Waterman, Interview with Eliot Beveridge, circa 1980
Located along Crabtree Point Road, the West District School served families living at Bartlett’s Harbor and all along the island’s western shore. The earliest reference to a school in the area was on an 1817 deed from Mark Eames, who owned large areas of land on Crabtree Point. References to the construction of a new school building at a cost of $950 were noted in 1866. Classes were held at the West District School until 1904. The school building was sold in 1909 for $138 and then torn apart in 1910, with the lumber used to build an island home.
